KS3 Rationale

Overview Statement 

In Art we encourage self-expression, creativity and therefore build confidence. Our curriculum helps students to develop the ability to interpret the World around us. By developing key skills such as colour, tone, line and pattern, students are able to explore a creative way of thinking. Students build knowledge of different art forms, media processes and techniques. Students can specialise in areas such as photography and 3D Sculpture. 

 

A high-quality Art education ensures all students: 

  • Are able to interpret the world around them in a creative way. 

  • Students will be able to explore key pieces of Art with the use of the Formal Elements. 

  • Students will be able to work both individually and collaboratively to research, select, develop and present original ideas. 

  • Students will build their knowledge on a variety of artists, in order to become artistically illiterate and interpretate intent and meaning. 

Our high-quality Art curriculum ensures students can use, understand, experiment and take risks with the application of a variety of media, processes, techniques and technologies. 

 

Key concepts of Art allow: 

  • Develop original and creative ideas that guide artistic exploration and understanding in order to develop as effective and independent learners. 

  • Develop creative, imaginative and innovative skills when exploring and making images, artifacts and products.  

  • Develop concepts that represent the formal elements to create visual compositions that reflect the main principles of design. 

  • Become confident in taking risks and learn from experience when exploring and experimenting with ideas, processes, media, materials and techniques. 

  • Develop critical thinking and self-expression with investigation and experimentation, through the communication of ideas, emotions and perspectives. 

  • Develop and refine ideas and proposals, personal outcomes or solutions with increasing independence. 

  • Acquire and develop technical skills through working with a range of media, materials, techniques, processes and technologies with purpose  

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of art and design in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures. 

  • Develop an awareness of the roles and individual work practices evident in the production of art and craft in the creative and cultural industries.

Teamwork 

We work collaboratively to encourage the development of ideas, as well as producing work, and critiquing our own, and others, work.

We learn to express ourselves openly, and appreciate diverse opinions and perspectives. We create a collaborative and inclusive classroom environment, while respecting our peers, staff, art work and equipment.  

Ambition 

Our ambition is set by working towards ambitious goals, pushing past our artistic comfort zones. We are encouraged to explore innovative techniques, embrace challenges and aim for our personal best. 

Community 

Our art classrooms are where students come together to create, share and learn from one another. We exhibit our work around the school, and offer open evenings and exhibitions to display our work to the wider community. 

Knowledge 

Art knowledge provides students with a deeper understanding of traditions, techniques and styles, enabling students to make informed choices in their creative processes, techniques and ideas.
