Personal Development Day - A Message from Mr. Murray

On Tuesday we are running our exciting Personal Development Day. This special day has been carefully designed to provide our students with enriching experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Throughout the day, students will participate in age-appropriate activities tailored to their year group's specific developmental needs. These experiences will help develop crucial life skills including teamwork, problem-solving, and self-confidence, while also supporting their personal growth and social development:

Year 7: Diversity Role Models workshops

Year 8: Liverpool Museums and Albert Dock cultural trip

Year 9: Careers and science STEM events

Year 10: ‘Fusion Future’ – A blend of different activities (physical, digital, culinary, leadership)

Year 11: ‘Futures Day’ – An exciting mix of different Sixth Form taster sessions

Year 12: Edge Hill University trip

Year 13: ‘Launch Pad’ – Practical preparation for the future, including UCAS applications, study support and volunteering opportunities.

The benefits of such days are well-documented in educational research. Students often discover new interests, develop leadership skills, and forge stronger relationships with their peers. These experiences can also help them better understand their strengths and areas for growth, contributing to their overall personal development.

Importantly, this day will provide valuable experiences that can help shape your child's future career aspirations. Through various activities, students will develop transferable skills highly valued by employers, gain insights into different career pathways, and begin to understand how their interests and abilities might align with future opportunities. This exposure to different experiences and challenges can be instrumental in helping them make informed decisions about their future education and career choices.

Key Information:

• Date: Tuesday 17^th December
• Normal school hours apply.  All students will register in their form rooms before starting activities or trips.
• All students should wear full school uniform.
• ONLY Year 10 students should wear comfortable non-uniform for practical activities.
• Lunch arrangements: Year 8 and Year 12 students will need to bring a packed lunch.  Any students eligible for free school meals will be able to collect a packed lunch from the canteen in the morning.  For all other students in school, the canteen will be open as usual.

We are pleased to inform you that this Personal Development Day is being offered completely free of charge to all students, as part of our commitment to providing enriching educational experiences for everyone.  We believe this day will be both enjoyable and valuable for our students, providing them with memories and skills that will last well beyond their school years.

Christmas Holidays

School closes for the Christmas holidays next Friday 20th December at 12.40pm. Some grab bags will be available for boys who normally have free school meals and who would like a meal before leaving site.

This has been rescheduled for Monday and Wednesday next week.

My Child At School

Can all parent/carers please ensure that they have access to MCAS (My Child At School).  MCAS is an online portal and app that allows parents to view their child's school performance in real time:

Parents can access information such as attendance, behaviour, reports, student timetables, book parents' evening and soon this will be the way that you will make payments for lunch and trips etc.

Parents can access MCAS through a web browser or the MCAS app, which is available for Android and iOS.

To log in to the MCAS Parent Portal, parents need:

Future Designers Competition, Years 7-11

Future Designers challenges students to redesign Williamson Square, Liverpool. The competition:

• Is open to students in years 7-11 of all abilities and backgrounds
• Gives young people the opportunity to showcase their designs to a panel of industry professionals
• Helps the development of portfolio and presentation skills
• Is ideal for art, DT and geography students
• Has great prizes, including prizes from Cass Art and theatre tickets, which will be awarded at a celebration evening in early 2025.

Parents and caregivers session: Unifrog basics

Join our webinar to find out how, as a parent or caregiver, you can use Unifrog to support conversations about your child’s post-16 options and post-18 progression routes, including apprenticeships, universities, and careers. Delivered by Unifrog staff, the session will give you an overview of the key student tools for different year groups, highlight our resources, and show you where you can find out information about our upcoming events.

Attendance

Mr Roche's form, 8F1, were our best attenders this week. They have consistently been the top attending form in Year 8 since September. This is a great team effort. Well done 8F1 and Mr Roche. We hope you enjoyed your sweets and chocolates.  Which form will win the trophy next time?

Library

The semi-final of the Spelling Bee took place last week with another brilliant turn out from our Year 7 students and a 10/10 from Finn Kapinski in 7R1. Well done to the 10 boys that got through to the final which will be taking place tomorrow during AM Reg.

Cadets

Mr. Fox would like to share how amazing our cadets were last Thursday. A big part of the cadet programme is for students to lead and teach lessons. A special mention to Blake King, Zac Hughes and Ashton Mountford as they all delivered their first lesson. 

The top eight cadets will be getting their first flying lesson in January.

On Thursday, the cadets will be out of school on a reward trip.

A reminder that the trip must be paid in full by the frst day back in January.

Wirral Fuss

Wirral FUSS have moved all Wallasey school uniform stock out of the St Luke's Hoylake hub, so please do not go there to collect uniforms you need. 

They will be announcing a new local hub location when everything is set up, but in the meantime, please continue to request FREE uniforms online using the form which you'll find under the 'What do you need?' heading on our website, www.wirralfuss.co.uk and choose the best collection point for you. 

Our hubs will be closing for the Christmas period 16^th December - 6th  January.

Swimming Lessons

Active Wirral will be providing intensive swimming sessions for non-swimmers during the holidays. Please contact us if you would like to put your son forward for one of the places we have been allocated.

Food Allergy Awareness

Please could all parents/carers ensure we have up-to-date allergy and dietary information for their son. In all school years, students may be involved in tasting and cooking a variety of different foods. We will accommodate for allergies and dietary needs, but only if we are made aware beforehand.

Reporting an Absence 

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.
