A Message from Mr. Whiteley

As the cold weather continues, please ensure that your son is wearing the correct uniform.  Pupils can wear a plain t-shirt underneath their school shirts and/or black or grey v-neck jumpers underneath their blazers.  We do not allow coats to be worn in and around the building.  Students should bring a bag to school with them, which will fit their coat, books, PE kit and lunch in if possible.  Please continue to reinforce the fact that we have a no phones policy in school.  Pupils should enter the school building with their phone locked in their Yondr pouch or leave their phone at home.  A number of pupils forget their pouches on a daily basis.  These are expensive and have been provided by the school. If pupils continue to forget / lose or damage these, they will be expected to purchase a new Yondr pouch. This is part of the uniform.

In the last few months, we have had visitors from schools across Wirral, the North West and even as far afield as Kent, who have been looking at the quality of relationships within the school.  I am delighted to report that they have been very complimentary in their feedback.   It is clear that the school's improvement process shows no signs of slowing down.  Thank you for all your support in helping us achieve this.

Over the course of the year, attendance has improved by 3% and is now above national averages. Although the number of children at risk of being classed as persistently absent remains a concern, I would appreciate your support in encouraging all children to attend whenever possible. No absences will be authorised during term time unless supported by medical evidence.

Drama Club is cancelled tomorrow. It will be back next week as normal.

Bikeability

A reminder that Bikeability is taking place in school on Thursday and Friday next week for those students that signed up.

STEM

The Unilever Bright Future Inspire Programme starts on Thursday at Prenton Park, with our students being given an insight into how to produce the ideal product! They will gain first-hand experience of the activities of Unilever's research and development site, paying particular attention to the packaging, formulation, processing, digital and customer technical departments and the role they play in producing that ideal product.

Library

Round 1 of the Year 7 Spelling Bee took place last week with most of our Year 7 students taking part in this written round! Well done to all the boys that went through to round 2, which will be taking place tomorrow during morning registration.

To celebrate Non-Fiction November, our Book of the Week is You Can Change The World by Margaret Rooke. This wonderfully inspiring book includes 50 stories from teenagers around the world who have dared to change the world they live in. Available in the library now!

STEM Trip

This week, a group of 6th Form students attended a Science Live event, held in the palatial grandeur of Birmingham University’s Great Hall. Students were exposed to an abundance of scientific minds. A plethora of professors, full of enthusiasm, all displaying their great passion for their fields of research.  Many students’ favourite speaker was Dr Tim Lamont, who explained the amazing concept of how underwater acoustics affect the quantity of both fish and coral in reef environments and how this has been used to aid the regeneration of coral reefs that have been decimated by climate change. Much fun was had by all, during a scientific talk about laughter and how it’s easy for humans to “catch a laugh”, which counter-balanced another talk on understanding mental health.  Overall, students had an entertaining and thought-provoking day, as well as picking up invaluable exam hints from acclaimed examiner Michelle Oldfield.

Food Allergy Awareness

Please could all parents/carers ensure we have up-to-date allergy and dietary information for their son. In all school years, students may be involved in tasting and cooking a variety of different foods. We will accommodate for allergies and dietary needs, but only if we are made aware beforehand.

Please contact the school office with updated information on 0151 638 8131 or via email admin@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on then at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
