Year 7 & 12 Meet the Form Tutor Event

This event will be starting shortly in school and is a chance for parents to meet their son's form tutor and discuss how their son is settling into school and 6th Form.

Students in Y11 are invited to this event on Thursday to see the range of courses on offer to them post 16 here at The Mosslands School.

Attendance

This week, Mr Gouldson's form, 7R2, received the 'Best Attendance Award'.   Well done on this team effort! This is a great achievement. We hope you enjoyed your sweets and chocolates.  Which form will win the trophy in a fortnight's time?

Wirral Volunteer, Fundraising and Enrichment Fair

This event took place in the school hall yesterday afternoon and was a great opportunity for students as it included representatives from charity sectors, public sector and enrichment providers with opportunities to find ways to give back to their community, find a fun activity to join and make new friends. A number of the exhibitors were promoting their fundraising and volunteering opportunities which was perfect for those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award or the National Citizen Service. Students had the opportunity to meet and ask questions safely and directly to providers and understand more about turning an experience into a career or lifelong passion.

Careers

Filmmaking, Sound Technology, Technical Production and Design: Taster workshops at LIPA (Sunday 20 October).

LIPA will be offering some FREE taster workshops on 20^th October for Year 12 and 13 students to give a flavour of studying production arts, design and creative technology courses at university. Attendees will select one area and spend a couple of hours immersing themselves in practical activities supported by our staff and students and using our impressive facilities.

We are offering workshops in the following areas:

• Filmmaking. Work in a multi-camera studio to produce a live news show. Experiment with motion capture to create digital avatars and virtual worlds. Use top-level technology to manage the post-production process.
• Sound Technology. Collaborate with an instrumentalist to produce a high-quality recording. Use an advanced mixing desk to assemble a new mix from previously recorded work. Record Foley FX to produce sound for a section of film.
• Technical/Production: Experiment with lighting a music gig and working with a lighting board. Build your own prop and discover the evolution of the creation process.
• Design: Build a scale model, from working with templates to construction to 3D printing. Design your own costume, experimenting with materials and fabrics in response to a given theme.

Sessions will run from 10am to 12.30pm. In the afternoon, LIPA is holding an open day – and we strongly encourage attendees to hang around to find out more about our courses and student life here.  Once you book a taster workshop, we will send you more details about the open day. Lunch will be provided for any attendees staying on for the open day.

Year 10 Work Experience

Thank you to those parents/carers who have already contacted us for support or submitted completed placement forms. We remind all parents and carers of Y10 that they are encouraged to find their own placement in a workplace of interest. We will continue to support pupils in school in the coming weeks.

If any parents/carers or family members can offer a placement at their place of work, please contact us in school.

Birdsong Theatre Trip - Wednesday 9th October @7:30pm

Mrs Brett has invited her KS4 and KS5 pupils to attend the above trip. This is on a first come, first served basis. Payment can be made on ParentPay.

The Acting Coach 

Mrs Brett welcomed @theactingcoachuk to work with selected Year 11 and 6th Form drama pupils. This was an incredible experience where the pupils developed their acting for screen skills with each having the experience of filming a self-tape.

STEM

On Monday, half of Y7 will be working in teams of four on a pair of STEM challenges. Working in teams of 4, students will create a marble run to safely move a product from A to B, which is all about physical construction, stable design, and working to a tight deadline, and then deliver a "Dragons Den" style presentation under camera!

Library

In honour of Black History Month, we are recognising the incredible voices and stories of Black British authors. These books in particular explore and celebrate Black identity, Black history or simply tell a brilliant tale. All available in the library now.

Please join us at our SEND Preparation for Adulthood Festival that we are holding at the Floral Pavilion on 8^th October from 10:00 – 19:00. This event is aimed at SEND young people from age 11 – 25 preparing for adulthood, moving to adult services and planning for their futures. There will be a huge marketplace of relevant stalls covering health and social care, further education, careers and more. As well as this, there will be a sensory room, MENCAP workshops for parent/carers, and presentations taking place in the theatre itself.

The marketplace of stalls will be held upstairs on the right-hand side of the Floral Pavilion and will be open from 10am – 7pm. Young people and their families will be able to go round and speak to a wide range of different relevant SEND services, ask lots of questions, and gather information.

There are still spaces available on the free MENCAP workshops on the topic of Deputyship and the Court of Protection. These will be held in the Panoramic Lounge, at the top of the Floral Pavilion. Any parent/carers interested, please follow these links for more information and to book your place:

Food Allergy Awareness

Please could all parents/carers ensure we have up-to-date allergy and dietary information for their son. In all school years, students may be involved in tasting and cooking a variety of different foods. We will accommodate for allergies and dietary needs, but only if we are made aware beforehand.

Reporting an Absence 

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.
